Walk With Me is an ongoing video series where I invite you to join me while I take some time to check in with myself. It’s all spontaneous, just like Somatic Experiencing — I like to slow down and see where my mind and body take me. I hope you enjoy watching the video or reading the transcript below, and thanks for spending a moment of your day with me.
Hello, I am back. I think I’m a little bit fuzzy but I think that’s because it’s cold and my phone was warm because it was in my pocket. So, look at this: I just took a walk and I’m on my way back from my walk. I am the only person out on the trail.
There’s a line of steps here. See this one? This one is my step from heading out and you can see there was somebody else that walked earlier today I guess but it feels really wonderful to be the only person out on this trail.
It makes me feel good. Tomorrow is Christmas for those who celebrate. I’ve been thinking about how interesting it is that I’m working all week this week and I have almost a full schedule and, you know, there’s only a few spaces left to make it full. I feel like that is an indication, right, it’s an indication perhaps that people know that they need to get regular work throughout the holidays, or, I don’t know, I guess I can have a lot of different thoughts about why my schedule is full, but it’s interesting that it is and you know the whole reason that I work through the holidays is because I always have.
I’ve always worked with animals or retail. And so you just work, because stores don’t close and animals still need to be fed and taken care of and so it kind of didn’t occur to me, it hasn’t occurred to me for the last several years where I’ve been working in a different type of work, hasn’t really occurred to me to not work, to close my practice for a week or 2 weeks or a month.
And it doesn’t mean I don’t need time off, I totally do, I mean it doesn’t have to be right now, but I think one of the things I’ve been considering is because the holidays, like I’m okay with not taking off the holidays.
Perhaps I can find another time during the year where it’s really not as much of a big deal and there aren’t as many stressful things going on in people’s lives as a general rule and I can take that time off. But I just, I’m still just kind of really interested -now-, next week, the week between or the week of New Year’s, is lighter than this week but still not empty, and yeah I’m just intrigued.
So I’m sitting with the question of: People need support. I mean, people need support all year round. And people need support during the holidays and if the holidays matter to you, then you should be able to take them off.
There isn’t a right or wrong, but because the holidays don’t matter as much to me, I celebrated the solstice for myself, because Christmas and New Year’s don’t matter as much to me. I can be there. I can continue supporting my people and I think I’ll keep doing that. And sitting with the question of, wow, it’s interesting. It’s just really interesting.
So if I’m seeing you during this week, then happy to have done that. And if you’re one of my people next year, then maybe you’ll want to see me next year. Have a happy holiday.
